Cornman Farms Cooks Handcrafted Currywurst for Oktoberfest

Terrific German eating and drinking
Looking for something delicious to do with the family for Oktoberfest this fall? If you like great German eating, book yourself a meal at Cornman Farms this coming Sunday to get one of Germany’s most popular and tasty street foods—hand-crafted currywurst!
What’s currywurst? It’s pretty much what it sounds like—curry-scented sausage served with curry ketchup! While it’s unfamiliar in Southeast Michigan, it’s super popular in Germany. The Independent calls it “Germany’s answer to fish and chips.” The country consumes something like 800,000,000 of them every year! Berlin alone accounts for about 70,000,000. For a while, the city even had a museum for it! The director of the Currywurst Museum, Birgit Breloh, says, “No other German dish inspires such excitement.” Martin Löwer, the curator, calls currywurst “a cult icon in the city “ and touts its universal appeal: “People from all walks of life enjoy the experience. It’s uncomplicated and that’s what people want.”
Sadly, the museum closed in 2018, but the spirit of currywurst carries on. Currywurst even worked its way into the country’s musical consciousness. In the year we opened the Deli, 1982, the song “Currywurst” on German singer Herbert Grönemeyer’s album Total Egal hit the German charts. Its lyrics are all about finishing the night shift at work and heading into town for a currywurst and a beer!
This coming Sunday, the 28th of September, Corman Farms will be serving up a one-time-a-year, special meal—Cornman’s hand-crafted Currywurst, hand-cut fries, and a lovely Lebkuchen spice cookie for dessert. Lots of beer and wine will be on hand if you want to partake! And there’ll be live German music from the Alpen Duo! Maybe I’ll see if they know Grönemeyer’s song!
So swing by Sunday (book in advance online), eat some currywurst, appreciate modern-day German culture, drink a beer, and enjoy the season.
P.S. On Sunday, October 5, the Cornman Farms team will be serving Jägerschnitzel—full-flavored, locally sourced pork, fried to a crisp golden brown and topped with a rich, creamy fall mushroom sauce. Served with fries on the side!
