Here’s to a Happy Rosh Hashanah and a Great 5787!

An array of New Year’s foods from across the ZCoB

At the Deli

Chopped Liver – My grandmother’s recipe! Great as an appetizer or spread on a thick slice of hand-cut Bakehouse Challah.

Chicken Broth – The long-simmered broth of Amish chickens, sans salt, ready to heat and serve.

Matzo Balls – Formed by hand using the marvelous matzo meal from the wacky and wonderful people at the Matzo Project.

Dates from Rancho Meladuco – Incredibly good and fully ripened on the tree (most commercial dates are picked early for easier handling and longer shelf life). Highly recommended for just about everything you can imagine.

Two dozen artisanal honeys to celebrate a sweet New Year! Buy two or three and create a tasty (and educational) little “honey bar” for your family to dip apples into.

Plus whole-roasted Amish chicken, carrot tsimmes, lemon couscous, noodle kugelknishes, and much more!

At the Bakehouse

Bumble Honey Coffee Cake – The dark deliciousness of buckwheat honey brings a beautiful blend of bold and sweet. (See below for more on this tasty holiday cake.)

More Rockin’ Challah – I’ve loved this traditional Moroccan challah ever since we started making it maybe 15 years ago. Enriched with eggs, braided, and dusted with a generous coating of poppy, sesame, and anise seeds.

German Challah – One of my current favorites, this is the challah that renowned food writer and University of Michigan alum Joan Nathan was raised on! It’s less sweet, a bit more dense, and, I think, really delicious.

Challah Turbans – Available with or without raisins soaked in Myers’s Dark Rum.

Eve’s Apple Babka – This stuff is selling like crazy, which tells me it’s probably a surefire hit on your holiday table.

Chocolate Raisin Babka – A dark chocolate treat to serve, sliced or whole, for the holiday—or bring one as a host gift!

Rugelach – The classic Eastern European Jewish cookie, filled with currant walnut, raspberry, apricot (my favorite), or chocolate. Not only is it sweet and delicious; apricots are a symbol of dignity and democracy! We also have two special flavors that we make only for Rosh Hashanah—date and coffee, and then, of course, apple. Buy an assortment and share with family and friends.

Apple Rétes – A super tasty, handmade Hungarian apple strudel! A Central European classic.

At Mail Order

A host of good things to ship out for the High Holidays. Not everything I wrote about above can be shipped, but a good bit of it can, including honey cake, knishes, and an array of artisan honeys. Order up for a friend who could use a New Year’s boost! There’s also this lovely cheese-centric Rosh Hashanah gift box. Missed shipping for Rosh Hashanah? There’s still time to get your gift to friends before Yom Kippur (September 20-21).

At the Roadhouse

Creole Matzo Ball Soup– From our North Carolina–based food writer friend Marcie Ferris’s fantastic book Matzo Ball Gumbo. Gently spicy and definitely delicious.

Chopped Liver – Chicken livers puréed with onions, hard-boiled eggs, and a touch of Tabasco. Topped with tasty dark-caramelized onions.

Rainbow Trout with Cucumber and Pomegranate –Sautéed Michigan rainbow trout with a cucumber and pomegranate salad, organic Carolina Gold rice, and honey horseradish sauce.

Braised Amish Chicken Thighs – Sweet and savory braised chicken thighs, with honey-roasted root vegetables and charred onion polenta.

Zingerman’s Bakehouse Apricot Rugelach – Hand-rolled with a cream cheese and butter pastry, and dusted with a cinnamon-sugar combo! (As mentioned above, apricots are also a symbol of dignity and democracy.)

At the Candy Manufactory

Rosh Hashanah family-size Zzang! bars – Another great host gift! A terrific post-dessert sweet to savor with coffee and conversation, celebrating all the good things about heirloom cacao that I wrote about above.

P.S. In the mood for something special to cook at home? Here’s a recipe I wrote up a few years back for how to make a superb pasta dish with liver, using the Deli’s Chopped Liver as a key ingredient. A delicious, different way to put chopped liver on your holiday table!
