April's Nonprofit Spotlight is Family Learning Institute

Through collaboration with local schools and community partners, and the implementation of innovative programs, the Family Learning Institute engages children from economically challenged households to support their success in school and beyond. FLI believes that all students, regardless of life circumstances, deserve a chance to forge the skills they need to build the lives they dream.

Family Learning Institute has one of the strongest programs in helping our economically disadvantaged kids, get to grade level literacy (2nd – 5th grade). They have had phenomenal success, not only during the school year, but also through their summer programs, where they have helped hundreds of kids retain their literacy skills, both in reading and writing.

Ways to support FLI

Becoming a volunteer tutor, or volunteering in their outreach committees.

Check out volunteer options at familylearninginstitute.org/volunteers/
or by emailing [email protected].

FLI Reading Tutors volunteer once a week for one hour. Reading Tutors work one-to-one with an assigned student during the entire school year. All volunteers that work with youth are required to participate in an annual background check. There are additional weekly opportunities to work with small groups of students on other academic topics, such as writing, math, and educational games. FLI tutor training takes place several times each year.

Their outreach program is the same as their in-person program that takes place at various after school locations. Their summer Playground Programs are in collaboration with Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation and other local resources. FLI provides academic enrichment services for students in Ypsilanti. The FLI summer focus is to prevent summer learning loss.

How else can one donate

Besides donating funding or attending their upcoming fundraiser, you can also donate new books focused on 2nd through 5th grade, which are always appreciated, as are food donations for their events. You can contact their Executive Director, Sharine Buddin at [email protected] or call 734-995-6816 to make arrangements.

Why Zingerman's loves FLI

Zingerman's has been partnered with Family Learning Institute over the years because we're passionate about all children having access to literacy and learning. Particularly with the set-backs of the pandemic, we acknowledge the importance of giving students any additional support they need so that they can achieve their version of excellence. We're excited for their upcoming Trivia Night fundraiser as we have previously won their Spelling Bee! Let's see if we can take home a gold again!
