November and December our Nonprofit Spotlight is on Food Gatherers!

Food Gatherers exists to alleviate hunger and eliminate its causes in our community.

They rescue local food and leverage state and national food resources for hunger relief. They lead a network of hunger relief providers and engage the public in the fight against hunger. They create and sustain innovative new food programs in response to emerging needs. They recognize that hunger will not be solved through the provision of food alone, so they advocate for policies and system changes to create an equitable food system.

What have things been like this last year or so at Food Gatherers?

For the last 18 months Food Gatherers has remained open and responding to the dramatic rise in food insecurity as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year they distributed a record amount of food - 50% more than previous years! As the economy is reopening the need is dropping, but they anticipate it will be 18-24 months before the number of people seeking food reaches pre-pandemic levels.

How can people in the community contribute to FG?

Food Gatherers gratefully accepts donations of funds and food to support their mission. Recently, they've been able to host volunteers at their warehouse again. Visit their website (foodgatherers.org) to donate and to learn more about getting involved.

Food Gatherers also accepts food donations, including fresh produce, which can be delivered to their warehouse at 1 Carrot Way in Ann Arbor 48105 between 9:00am and 4:45pm Monday through Friday. To learn more about their most needed food items, check out their website.

What resources does FG provide to our community?

What does Zingerman's love about Food Gatherers?

This fantastic organization, though it operates separately from Zingerman's, was actually founded by the Zingerman's Deli back in 1988 right around Thanksgiving time. What began as a small group of volunteers who wanted to ensure nutritious food was available to all who needed it in our community has now become an impressive enterprise that serves tens of thousands of meals a day. The Zingerman's team is made up of people who love food and community so naturally we admire the work done at Food Gatherers which focuses on supporting both. Particularly during this holiday season, and after such a difficult year and a half for most of us, it's so important that we work towards a more equitable food system that serves all, because everyone deserves to have healthy and delicious food on their table.
