Vic Strecher could talk to you eloquently and cogently about public health, adventures, the life of cows and dogs in India, dung beetles, modern neuroscience and ancient philosophy, entrepreneurship, disease prevention, innovation …. and if that’s not reason enough to come and listen to Dr. Strecher talk then perhaps this is. Vic Strecher recently emerged from a life experience that made him question his ultimate purpose and being the kind of person he is, he distilled his learnings from the journey into a book On Purpose: Lessons in Life and Health From the Frog, The Dung Beetle, and Julia. The book is a self-help guide, college lecture, confessional, and time-travel adventure all rolled into one. On Purpose uses a beautiful, fantasy-fueled, graphic novel format to tell a story of self-discovery and personal growth you’ll never forget. A Beekeeper’s Dinner at Zingerman’s Roadhouse

Honey is honey, just that simple. But the life of a bee and making the honey is not. Did you know a hive of bees will fly over 55,000 miles to bring you one pound of honey? And that one pound of honey came from two million flowers? Considering one honeybee will only make about 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in her entire lifetime, that is not a simple task. Please join us at Zingerman’s Roadhouse this Wednesday, February 19, 7pm. Chef Alex has created a meal inspired by chef and spokesperson for The National Honey Board, Laurey Masterton and featuring recipes from her book, The Fresh Honey Cookbook. While Laurey is not able be at the dinner with us, her spirit and love of honey will shine through the meal.

Valentine’s Day Gifts & Desserts at Zingerman’s Bakehouse

  • Heart cookies – Heart-shaped butter cookies with a hint of fresh citrus zest, adorably decorated with fresh vanilla fondant. Individually bagged, these cookies make great little gifts for every Valentine on the list! Available 2/1-2/14.
  • Valentine’s Day Roses Cake – This sweet and luscious looking cake is completely covered in hand-piped pink butter cream rosettes and a sprinkle of sparkle. Inside are tempting layers of buttermilk chocolate cake and fresh strawberry butter cream. Available all month long!
  • Coconut Cosmic Cakes – Our cosmic cakes send most everyone over the moon with one bite and have taken the Bakehouse by storm from the start. We take two thin chocolate cake layers, sandwich them with very special butter cream fillings, and bathe them in crisp, intense dark chocolate. You can get vanilla or raspberry fillings everyday, but for these two days only we’re making a creamy coconut butter cream filling, made with Italian coconut paste. Available 2/13 & 2/14.
  • Chocolate Dipped Palmiers – Our crispy palmiers are made from our own hand-layered butter puff pastry. Here they take a little dip in intense dark chocolate. Available 2/13 & 2/14.
  • Chocolate Cherry bread – This bread is a chocolate lover’s fantasy come true–the best Belgian and French chocolates and dozens of Michigan dried cherries. A few minutes in the oven and the chocolate chunks begin melting and the aroma of cocoa fills the air. Available 2/13 & 2/14.

New Pie at Zingerman’s Bakehouse – Chocolate Cream Pie!

Attention chocolate lovers: we have a new pie just for you! It’s a Chocolate crust and rich custard made with dark Belgian chocolate and Mindo chocolate from Dexter, MI. We top each hand-made pie with sweetened whipped cream made with heavy cream from our friends at Guernsey Farms Dairy in Northville, MI. Mmm, chocolate!

Roasters-PickFebruary Roaster’s Pick at Zingerman’s Coffee Company

Java Sunda Hejo is truly handcrafted from the ancient land of Sunda (West Java). The coffee is dried on raised beds in bamboo greenhouses, which ensures stable drying and protects its unique sweetness and character. We have selected this microlot from the Chiwidey washing station. Historically, coffee was cultivated by the Dutch during the 16th century in the Guntur Mountain region, and the first exports were from the Sunda Kelapa port (now the modern day port of Tanjung Priok- Jakarta). Coffee from this region is grown by small farmers in the mountainous region around the beautiful city of Bandung. The hilly terrain does not allow for large plantations, hence the coffee is spread over a large region via small holdings. Java Sunda Hejo has a rich body that comes through with any filter methods. Press pots bring out brighter tobacco note and a slightly savory aspect. We like it in the press pot, Chemex, and Clever.

Inspired by the much beloved cheeses from the Loire River Valley in France, the Aged Chelsea is a mold ripened goat log coated in edible vegetable ash. The ash helps draw moisture to the cheese’s surface, developing a well-balanced flavor while providing an appealing grey exterior. At room temperature, the Chelsea oozes richness and its creamy, spreadable texture releases the naturally gentle flavor of the goat milk. It’s simply perfect with a Loire Valley white wine.

After some time away, these treats have returned to the Bakehouse!

Lemon Chess Pie: A variation on the southern classic, chess pie, made with lots of fresh lemon juice and zest, and a splash of buttermilk in an all butter pie crust. Lemon chess is a sunny spot in the winter time at the Bakehouse.

Sugar Crisp Muffins: Buttermilk nutmeg muffins, brushed with butter and rolled in cinnamon sugar. Some call it the doughnut muffin, and they positively adore it.

Flodni: The name flodni (fluden in Yiddish) refers to a layered and filled pastry. It’s a Hungarian specialty, as well as a traditional Jewish holiday pastry. We really enjoy the buttery pastry layered with three distinct fillings: honey poppy seed, raisin walnut and cinnamon apple. A little slice is perfect for your afternoon tea time.

9th Annual African American Dinner at Zingerman’s Roadhouse

Our community is rich with African American culture, history and knowledge and at our 9th Annual African American Dinner we will celebrate the African American Cultural and Historical Museum of Washtenaw County. The AACHM was established in 1993 to research, collect, preserve and exhibit cultural and historical materials about the life and work of Black Americans in Washtenaw County.
