For Immediate Release
June 1, 2008

BAKE!, the hands-on teaching bakery at Zingerman’s Bakehouse in Ann Arbor is highlighted as “a chocolate-dipped, cream-filled opportunity to learn From the best ” in the May issue of Midwest Living magazine. In the article, ML writer Hannah Agran shares her own Bake-cation experience—four days of baking and learning with Bakehouse owners and professional bakers.

“This carb-loaded getaway attracts a range of participants from around the country,” she observes. “Hardy home bakers share wide wood tables with kneading novices. Bake-cation even attracts the occasional professional. But an infectious curiosity unites every group,” she adds.

Bake-cation participants spend 8am-5pm each day kneading, rolling, mixing, baking and eating, as well as learning how to choose ingredients, the historical background of what they are making, and how to organize their baking for consistent success, with lunch provided each day by Zingerman’s. Participants leave with everything they made in class, plus loads of recipes and tips to make fresh baked goods at home. Folks from California, Oregon, Utah, Arizona, Minnesota, Texas, Kentucky, Alabama and Michigan have already registered for upcoming sessions.

“BAKE! is the School of Hard Knocks, without the pain, humiliation and pressure that typically accompany a restaurant apprenticeship,” explained Ann Arbor News food writer, Nan Bauer. “You work side by side with superb teachers while you’re up to your elbows in ingredients. The class was fun.”

Upcoming pastry Bake-cations are offered June 9-12, July 21-24 and September 15-18 (just added!); a bread Bake-cation is slated for July 7-10. Sessions run 8am-5pm each day at  BAKE!, the teaching bakery near Zingerman’s Bakehouse, 3723 Plaza Dr. in Ann Arbor. Cost is $1000. Limited spaces are available.
